Phoenix Metro SFR sales price change 2000-2008 in 4D

Click here to View in Google Earth

Annual Average Single Family Detached Resale home prices by Municipal Planning Area in the Phoenix Metropolitan Statistical Area 2000-2008 (YTD Nov 2008).

10 dollars per meter. (Updated)

Dark Green = $23k - $100k
Green = $100k - $200k
Orange = $200k - $300k
Red = $300k+

These are not list prices but I could arrange that. Thought about breaking it down by MLS area or zip code but I have not yet got to that level of detail. Have not yet tried month to month changes. There are several possibilities.

I could possibly extend this to a regional or national level.

UK Postcode Sectors

I took all the postcode sectors for the UK and created this KMZ file.

The accuracy at the street level leaves something to be desired.

If I could find any interesting post code sector data, I would be interested in creating a thematic map. Anything with counts and/or dates.

Here is a real estate example. Use your imagination to estimate what the count represents.

I tried adding the file here but it won't take it. So here it is with the google earth API with a link to download the KMZ on it:

Government Data in 3D via the Google Earth API

I have been reading with some interest in using the Google Earth API to view public data in your average browser. 3D is available using the center mouse button but I really do miss the Google Earth navigation tool they got rid of in the old version for tilting. The new one just is not as intuitive (or useful, in my opinion). 4D, or time slider inclusion, is still a feature request for the API at this time.

I have been most impressed with the Peachtree City Google Earth Map (Beta) as well as New Mexico dreaming sites.

These sites are interesting examples of how to use the API to promote spatial awareness in terms of municipal functions and infrastructure planning, not to mention emergency preparation and so forth.

I have posted all of my commercial real estate brokerage's land ownership research data into a webpage that my coworkers can use to access internal data with relative ease compared to, for example, an ArcIMS site. Granted, ArcIMS sites can offer much more in terms of analysis tools available. It does seem, however, that most casual users of mapping technology spend the majority of their time panning, zooming, and identifying items within the map than they do performing complex GIS analysis. And the price difference for ArcIMS ($$$) vs the Google Earth API ($0) is difficult to to avoid.

Here is a link to an example I have recently dabbled with. It features the city lots of Steamboat Springs, CO, along with some extra data such as land zoning, EMS response zones, and so forth. I have not yet made the parcel numbers searchable like the Peachtree City site, but I anticipate adding more data and functionality to it in the future.

Would any municipality be interested in someone (perhaps me!) setting something up like this for their constituents?

IED events in Afghanistan & Iraq from April 2007 to March 2008

Green = 0 fatalities
Yellow = 1-30 fatalities
Red = 30+ fatalities

Use the time slider to compare month to month.

The WITS site ( Worldwide Incident Tracking System ) has the data in Year-Month format as well as MM/DD/YYYY format. I think an exhibit of daily incidents would be more compelling but I am still working on a good way to convert M/D/YYYY to YYYY-MM-DD format.

While I applaud Off The Map for posting some of this data, I believe comparing the percent change of violent incidents in Iraq to those in Afghanistan is an apples to oranges comparison. While it is disturbing to see violence rise in the latter, it has significantly less violence than the former.

Animated Historical Political Boundaries Version 1

View in Google Earth

Forgive me if this has been done already. I found a bunch of shapefiles for historical political boundaries on Cartotalk.com and exported them all to KML with TimeSpans.

I can not vouch for the accuracy of the boundaries or lack thereof in terms of place and time, but I think it looks interesting and would like some feedback. There seem to me to be several historical boundaries unaccounted for in this data set.

I used Google's default yellow lines so it probably looks best with many of GE's default layers off. After I showed it to somebody they suggested I use a colored fill for some of them so I tried it on one as you can see in the animated gif above. Thought about adding clickable placemarks for perhaps relevant wikipedia articles or something, but have not yet attempted that.

I like the idea of combining geography and history. A few ideas that interested me during this export:

Viewing various historical data with the Google Earth API and time slider such as:

changes in assessor/county/tax parcel data and geography

changes in municipal, state, and federal land planning and zoning

changes in land and housing values over time and space to inspect patterns on larger and smaller scales

changes in migration patterns

incident tracking over time

view-based refresh of historical imagery in cooperation with the time slider

etc.

U.S. Oil consumption per square mile by state

View in Google Earth
By request! (I think this was the request):

100 meters of height per barrel of oil consumed per square mile per state for the year 2004. So Alaska comes in with 103 barrels of oil (10,300 meters high) per square mile per year. And New Jersey tops out at a modest 30,983 barrels of oil (3,098,300 meters high) per square mile per year.

I finally got around to increasing the data set to 100 days.

I suppose I could just update this about 3 times a year if anybody cares.

From December 17th, 2007 to March 25th, 2008
Green = Magnitude 3 - 4
Yellow = Magnitude 4 - 5.2
Red = 5.2 +

The source is USGS ---> http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsww/Quakes/quakes_all.php

They have some other good KML files that they made themselves but I didn't find any that were 'animated' so I made this. I'm not sure how to automate it though.

ANTOFAGASTA, CHILE looks a little bumpy lately.

I did give the points a height value based on magnitude but even after I assigned 1000 meters of height to each point of magnitude, it just doesn't seem to make much difference and I stopped caring. Richter scale 2.5-3.8 is green, 3.9-5.4 is yellow, and 5.5-7.7 is red.

Call for data

If you have any data you would like to see presented in Google Earth in 4 dimensions (3D plus time), please comment here. The data should have counts of something like:

incidents for incident tracking
sales volumes
polling data
etc.

location data like:

countries, states, zipcodes, lattitudes & longitudes, cities, metropolitan statistical areas, etc.

and the data should also have a time element, if possible, like:

Dates & times of any precision. Could be per century or by the second or whatever.

I am also interested in hearing ideas about what would look interesting or informative in this type of exhibit. Now taking requests.

California Fires in 4D for 2006

View in Google Earth View in Google Maps

It's only 4D in that the temp value is represented in foot height and you can use the slider to animate the sequence of fires.

Data taken from http://activefiremaps.fs.fed.us/gisdata.php

Terra and Aqua MODIS fire and thermal anomalies data generated from MODIS near real-time data acquired by the USDA Forest Service Remote Sensing Applications Center, University of Wisconsin Space Science and Engineering Center, University of Alaska-Fairbanks Geographic Information Network of Alaska, the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Direct Readout Laboratory, and NASA Goddard Space Flight Center MODIS Rapid Response System. Data provided in shapefile and coverage formats and is updated hourly.

I recommend either clamping the silder to the beginning and pressing play or restricting it to a length of 1 month and sliding manually.

The file contains all fire data for California for 2006. Let me know how I can make it better.

Dam Timeline Demo

Wrote a macro to extract time data out of a KML file with temporal attributes and auto-tag the placemark with that information.

This example uses Dam Completion data from 1850 to 1996.

If anybody has any data with counts, dates, and locations for me to play with, please let me know.
