They have some other good KML files that they made themselves but I didn't find any that were 'animated' so I made this. I'm not sure how to automate it though.
ANTOFAGASTA, CHILE looks a little bumpy lately.
I did give the points a height value based on magnitude but even after I assigned 1000 meters of height to each point of magnitude, it just doesn't seem to make much difference and I stopped caring. Richter scale 2.5-3.8 is green, 3.9-5.4 is yellow, and 5.5-7.7 is red.

Call for data
If you have any data you would like to see presented in Google Earth in 4 dimensions (3D plus time), please comment here. The data should have counts of something like:
incidents for incident tracking
sales volumes
polling data
etc.
location data like:
countries, states, zipcodes, lattitudes & longitudes, cities, metropolitan statistical areas, etc.
and the data should also have a time element, if possible, like:
Dates & times of any precision. Could be per century or by the second or whatever.
I am also interested in hearing ideas about what would look interesting or informative in this type of exhibit. Now taking requests.

California Fires in 4D for 2006
View in Google Earth View in Google Maps
It's only 4D in that the temp value is represented in foot height and you can use the slider to animate the sequence of fires.
Data taken from http://activefiremaps.fs.fed.us/gisdata.php
Terra and Aqua MODIS fire and thermal anomalies data generated from MODIS near real-time data acquired by the USDA Forest Service Remote Sensing Applications Center, University of Wisconsin Space Science and Engineering Center, University of Alaska-Fairbanks Geographic Information Network of Alaska, the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Direct Readout Laboratory, and NASA Goddard Space Flight Center MODIS Rapid Response System. Data provided in shapefile and coverage formats and is updated hourly.
I recommend either clamping the silder to the beginning and pressing play or restricting it to a length of 1 month and sliding manually.
The file contains all fire data for California for 2006. Let me know how I can make it better.

Phoenix Metro Housing Permits 4D 1996-2008
View in Google Earth
This is an experiment. I took data from several sources but mainly from here:
Census dot gov
2007-2008 are projections (probably bad projections).
Click the play button on the time component to see the permits go up and down. 1-600 permits in red. 601-3000 permits in yellow. 3001+ permits in green. 1 permit equals 1 meter of height.
I think i'll do something more interesting next.

I actually embedded the table into this one:

World Oil Consumption Per Capita
View in Google Earth
World Oil Consumption Per Capita by Country according to CIA Factbook.
I had to mess with this data a little bit to get it to show up on google earth. At first I just divided each countries consumption by its population to get per capita but the numbers were so low that they would not show up at all here. Even multiplying per capita use by 365 to get a years worth of data only had the USA using 24 barrels a year per capita. So after I got a figure for a year I also multiplied them all by a factor of 100,000 and so what you are seeing is the data from the CIA factbook in consumption of barrels per day per country divided by the countries current population for per capita and multiplied 36,500,000 times to get its representation in meters of height. I was surprised to see Singapore take the lead in per capita use! The USA comes in only 9th place right ahead of Canada. Interesting.
